Pistachios make a great snack

Earlier this year I bought a giant bag of Pistachios from Costco. Hello love affair. I’m hooked. I eat a lot of mixed nuts, which usually contain pistachios, but nothing compares to cracking open that shell!

Health Benefits of Pistachios

Thankfully pistachios are loaded with nutrients and high in antioxidants. A one ounce serving contains roughly 6 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, and 8% Potassium. Despite having around 12 grams of fat, about 90% of those grams are healthy fat. They also contain important vitamins and minerals. Phosphorus, Vitamin B6, Thiamin, Copper, and Maganese are just a few. These key nutrients assist various body functions like building strong bones, convert food to fuel and help the body metabolize glucose. All good stuff!! Too bad sour cream and onion potato chips can’t accomplish things like this.

Pistachios are also found to lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol. Even though they have a higher carb content, they are low on the glycemic index, so they don’t cause a large spike in blood sugar. Just be careful and check the service size. Like most nuts, a handful or two is all you will get in a serving. Sad face!!!

If you are counting calories, you might think nuts are not the best choice. Luckily, pistachios have some of the lowest calories available in nuts. Since they have a lot of fiber and protein, they can help you feel full longer.

Did you know….

Pistachios are actually a seed of the pistachio tree.*

They have been around a LONG time – dating back to 7,000 BC. Though they are native to the Middle East, today California produces 98% of the US supply. **

They open naturally while on the tree.

Grab a handful or two and enjoy. Good luck putting them down!
